One of the more overlooked aspects of setting up an office, whether at home or in a more corporate setting, is the furniture you choose such as desks, chairs, file cabinets, etc. Putting some thought into what you choose can make a big difference in your productivity and even your health in some cases.
Desks and chairs are probably the two most important things to consider. If you work at a desk you will be spending a great deal of time sitting in your office chair and working at your desk. Having a set that is comfortable and ergonomic, with a place for all your accessories and tools within easy reach, is paramount.
Over the last 15 to 20 years, ergonomics has become a major concern for most office workers. This is mainly due to the computer becoming so commonplace. Computer keyboards and mice were never designed with comfort and ergonomics in mind, until recently.
Your office chair should be sufficiently adjustable to allow you to adjust the height, the back support, and even the arm rests. The position of your body is critical to being comfortable, and staying healthy in the long term.
Your desk should offer sufficient storage for tools and accessories, but within reach so you don't have to constantly get up and down for things. It should also have an adjustable keyboard tray if you're using a computer.
Other things like file cabinets are more a matter of taste. Some people prefer wood units to metal units, while others would rather have the fireproof qualities of metal. Neither one is particularly different in what it can do, so you are more free to choose based on what you like.
Some people might even prefer to go for a more antique look, with antique desks and other furniture. This is again a matter of taste, but if you opt for true antiques just keep in mind that they are likely not designed with typing and computer use in mind.
